Not very useful if the intruder wants to hide his actions. The message
I get resets when the start/stop button is pressed: shut it off, then
turn it on.

I agree.  Static is the only concern, and clearly you did not damage
anything by using a vacuum.  And excess heat is as serious a problem.

The case was open when it started this AM.  Nothing was changed from
the night before except the power to the machine was off overnight.
This is the usual routine.  When it is not in use, it is shut down and
the power is off.

It has been running for a few hours, shut down, and restarted a few
times since.  The case is still open.
