Bought an HDMI cable at Best Buy. Kind of expensive, but I connected it from the laptop to the bigger monitor that I use for my desktop. Then I booted the laptop and, lo and behold, the laptop monitor came up normally. So did the external monitor, so now we know that it should work if the problem is in the laptop display. A more interesting question is why the laptop is now working. The only thing that I did to it was leave it unplugged it for a couple of hours. Heat?
