HDMI is just DVI with sound. HDMI to DVI adapters are cheap. However, if this is a hardware issue, and I think that highly likely since it took a reboot to fix it before it stopped completely, you won't get anything out of the external port either. You might need to pull the drive and mount it on your desktop to back it up.
