Wes, Oh. My mistake. I kept trying ssh mail.appl-ecosys.com and so were the traceroute commands ... except for that one. I ran that just to get the output, but the hops halted at the same server regardless of domain name. Almost certainly because I had the incorrect port in the firewall/router.
