The flatbed scanner is plugged into a 4-port USB adapter that is connected to a USB port on the rear of the system. The speakers are also plugged into the 4-port adapter.
The speakers work just fine. Xsane no longer finds the flatbed scanner when plugged into any of the three available ports in the adapter. But, plugging the scanner into a USB port on the front of the system, xsane immediately finds it and opens without asking me which of the two entries for the same scanner to use.
