I've got an RT-N66U. It's been fairly solid. Here are some 
observations:

1. The stock firmware is Linux-based. You can get to a shell and
    do manipulations not available via the GUI, like change the
    default iptables or ip6tables rulesets.

2. I haven't attached anything to the device via USB (shared
    disk, printer, 3G/4G dongle), so I have no assessment about
    such things.

3. Older versions of the firmware had an incomplete ip6tables
    ruleset. I filed a bug with ASUS and it was fixed within
    a month.

4. The firmware has an auto-update facility, but ASUS sometimes
    has never versions available on its web site that haven't
    been blessed for automated distribution but are worth
    checking out when they address a local issue.
