that printer was originally a business-class machine intended for use in
corporate offices, administered by IT professionals. the interface is nigh
inconceivable to one who doesn't think like that. just see my video - even
by following that, it's really tough to get it right. even I screwed it up
the first time in the video, and that was after practicing several times
before recording.

we were able to get on a video call via google hangouts, and I could see
the printer's screen and controls and talk him through the myriad button
presses to get all the network numbers set right. IP, subnet mask, gateway.

it pretty much worked right away at that point.
