In spite of the fact that the update tool did not indicate any
repository problems, the first thing I would try is
sudo apt-get update
If that doesn't accomplish anything, then I would try the panel restart
command, but it's been too long since I've used it and I can't remember
it. IIRC it was something like 'kill gnome-panel,' after which the
panel would automatically restart.
