Fetched 4,725 kB in 10s (466 kB/s)

rsteff@Enu-1:~$ sudo kill gnome-panel
kill: failed to parse argument: 'gnome-panel'

Hmm.

rsteff@Enu-1:~$ ps -ef | grep panel
rsteff 2245 2162 0 Nov09 ? 00:07:12 gnome-panel
rsteff 7488 7388 0 13:03 pts/5 00:00:00 grep --color=auto panel
rsteff@Enu-1:~$ kill -9 2245

The panel went away, and then came back without the red triangle.

Next I ran Software Updater, which found a large number of things to do.
I let it do those. [Saved this as a draft.]

A restart was required, and all looks normal.

Thanks!
