While many users think they need only infrequent backups of part of their systems, they've not recovered from a catestrophic hardware failure, or a careless slip where the finger hits the [Enter] key before the brain processes they're wiping out critical files or subdirectories. FWIW, I strongly recommend that everyone make daily incremental backups to an external drive controlled cron. You may never need to use everything, but if you do you'll never regret having it available. That written, dirvish can be a bit of a hassle to correctly configure, but once set up it works like a charm.
