I have a new-to-me HP tower on which I want to install Ubuntu. The hard
drive has Windows Vista Business installed on it. I put a USB stick in
and booted from it. I clicked on the install choice, as opposed to the
try choice. After awhile (longer than what I'm used to) I get a window
that says, "Something else" and has an empty space with headers that say:

Device | Type | Mount point | Format? | Size | Used | System

Under the empty space are buttons:

[+][-][Change ...] [New Partition Table ...][Revert]

The buttons on the right are grayed out.

Next is a line that says:

Device for boot loader installation:
[/dev/sda ]

Under that, on the right side, are buttons:

[Quit] [Back] [Install Now]

When I click on Install Now I get a pop up error message:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
No root file system

No root file system is defined.

Please correct this from the partitioning menu.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After clicking on OK I clicked on [Change ...], but nothing appears to
happen.

The button at the top of the screen does allow me to restart, which I
have now done three times.

Is there something about the way Windows Vista is installed that I need
to somehow override?
