The correct name is XWindow.  Windows(TM) is Microsoft.
There is no software called XWindows.

For Linux on Intel, it is usual to get the source code from

http://www.xfree86.org/

You can get either the 3.3.6 or the 4.0.1, if the latter version
supports your video card.  In general you have a better chance 
with 3.3.6.

We do not usually get the sources from x.org, because those
are not yet properly ported to Linux on Intel.
  
xfree86 supplies you with a basic but complete XWindow system,
including a minimal window manager (twm), and a properly configured
xinit, so that running startx gives you something reasonable.
If you do not like twm, you can compile fvwm2 (get the fvwm2 icons from
somewhere), or enlightenment, or maybe OpenMotif mwm (if you are not
a Stallman-purist).
