AFAICR, this limit was present because of the maximum allowable
virtual interfaces on the older kernels. This could be gone in
the recent versions... I'm not sure. I'd appreciate it if anyone
can confirm. :)

Use the name-based virtual web hosting feature of Apache -- most
web hosting providers I've come across do. With this setup,
all you'll need is just one single IP address for the box, have
the virtual hostnames point to this IP, then configure Apache
name-based virtual hosting.
All you have to worry now is how many domains your box will be
able to handle! =)
