the reason redhat jumps to sda5 is because it uses an extended partition
for the other file systems.  extended partitions start at 5, to make way
for the 4 main partitions in the partition table

This practice is considered good, as you don't use up all 4 main
partitions if you have a lot of linux file systems to create.
