Although I think some schools - if not most - familiarize their students
with design patterns, proficiency is another matter. Ateneo teaches design
patterns in CS 123: Software Engineering (is this correct, Jess?). They
apply it when working on projects and are also tested on their knowledge of
the various design patterns. But I think it takes a lot more than one
semester to get people used to thinking about those patterns. =)
Anyway, since you - and quite a few other people, apparently - believe it's
really the passion to learn that allows us to overcome the limitations of
our education... <wave hands> Help me! <laugh> I've been into computers
since I was a kid and I really love to program. I'm currently a sophomore
student in Ateneo taking up - what else? - computer science. I've been
taking advanced CS classes thanks to Dr. Vergara, who allowed me to do that,
but I still want to do so much more than that. =)
I've read the books in the library and I try to apply what I've learned from
books like Code Complete and Design Patterns in my programming, and I also
try to teach others. We're also working on improving the way Ateneo does CS,
and hopefully these improvements will propagate to the other schools.
I want to make a difference not only in the way I'm learning but also in the
way other people are learning. I want to become one of the best programmers
in the world. =) But I can't train myself well enough - I still don't have
the experience and perspective that other people do. I find it hard enough
to find people who are as into computers as I am - I always want to get to
know other people so that we could learn from each other. It would be really
great if I could find a mentor, someone who's done the same thing and who
can guide me. That's why I constantly try to seek out better programmers,
people who really love what they're doing.
Can anyone help me?
