That's what getting a scholarship or a fellowship is for. ;) Also,
getting into an MS or PhD program and becoming a Research
Associate/Assistant under a specific professor will get you to become an
official "slave" to the said professor. <grin> Said professor may or may
not provide you with adoption papers, but generally you get the privilege
of borrowing eir books, taking you with er to conferences, and possibly
helping you get funding for said perks. Of course, I wouldn't mind that
happening to me either.
