Reseirfs is very stable. We have been running it here at SuSEPhil in Subic for almost
16 mos now on 19 production servers and without a hitch. Not even after the Luzon wide
blackout. and our almost 800GB of CVS repository didnt even sustain a bit of damage.

Yes. reiserfs uses a spaning tree algo adapted by SuSE frm the failsafe proj. with sgi
combining a rather cohesive synchronization of packing and moving smaller files
tremedously increasing performance in I/O intensive operations like squid or sql. our
own lab testing shows tremendous increase in overall performance for very busy squid
proxy servers use in one of asia's top isp.

there is so much more to gain rather than loss when upgrading to reiserfs vs. ext2.
> 5. simple lang bang install? - tips pls
Yes. SuSE has been offering Reseifs as an install option since 6.3 At version 7, it is
already a default FS installation making ext2 only an option.

>yes. But its not yet in the mainline kernel of linus+alan. You need to 'patch'

SuSE's has been pushing for the inclusion of reserfs since 2.2.14.
Reasons for it not making the mainline is rather political rather than technical.
alan cox seems to favor ext3 over reiserfs for some reason. but accdg to Linus the
chances of RFS making it in 2.4 is almost certain over other journaling filesystem
contenders.
it not being in the mainline kernel yet should not be a deterrent. in fact this is the
breather that linux has been waiting to make it compete in the enterprise. SuSE, who
designed Reiserfs thru Hans Reiserf, has taken a bold step to integrate it in the
distro together with LVM to push linux to the enterprise. and we have been consistent
with that with the same variation of code use for SuSE for IBM S/390 mainframes.
