For Ethernet, the pairs that are active are 1 and 2, and 3 and 6. Each pair
should use the twisted cable, otherwise, it will not have the noise shielding
effect of a twisted pair -- it just might still work, but not for long
distances.
Generally for card to hub connection, the wiring is straight, 1-2 pair
connected to 1-2 pair, 3-6 pair connected to the 3-6 pair, 4-5 pair connected
to 4-5 pair and 7-8 pair connected to 7-8 pair.
for a card to card connection, the 1-2 pair is connected to the 3-6 pair and
vice versa.
