Try using a colon ":" where you want the dot to be. I recall seeing some of Mr.Sam's C 
code that essentially maps a colon to period. Can't remember where though...it might 
have made its way into Cyrus-IMAP.

Not allowing "." in email addresses is a good idea for security, specially since email 
addresses usually map to directories or files in a filesystem.
