Are you using the rpm version of qmail or the tarball?  In either case,
check that you have checkpassword installed (try doing a find).  If it isn't
there, try installing it.  Your qmail  script may be calling qpop3d with an
argument to use checkpassword as your authentication mechanism but can't
find it.  Drove me nuts before too but i dunno if that's what's causing your
troubles.   :)

Oh, yea, for those of you asking for mail solutions try:
    - qmail-smtp for smtp services
    - vpopmail or vmailmgr for supporting virtual domains
    - courier-imap (or qmail's qpop3d) for mail retrieval
    - sqwebmail for web-based mail
    - vqsignup to allow anonymous users to sign up for your webmail

For those wanting to retrieve mails from your ISP account and stuff it into
your own corporate mail server, try pullmail.
