What should we, members of PLUG, system admins of our networks,
linux users and enthusiasts, do in these times of political
and economic crises? Here are some starting ideas. You are welcome
to add to or modify them.
1. People rely on us to provide reliable and fast service. E-mail,
SMS-to-email, and websites, are just some of the communications
media that my own University uses to talk to its faculty, staff, and
students. Let us make sure that our networks are in top form and our
internet connection is always up to provide these services. We should
say as the Post Office says, "No rain, typhoon, flood, brownout, etc.,
will down our networks or stop us from doing our jobs."
2. Let us keep our networks secure. The "enemy" can spam us, send us
viruses, ping us to death, tap on our lines and promiscuously examine
all our unencrypted IP packets, etc. Let us install anti-spam, anti-ping,
tls-mail, ssl, ssh, firewall, etc., to increase our network security.
Most of all, let us regularly examine our logs to check for intrusions.
3. If we are a popular site, like elagda.com, let us make sure that network
response is quick enough so that people do not get bored waiting for
their webpages to display. I do not know how to do this, but you
smart people should find out ways to improve response time.
