The Virge came later. It's the S3 86c325 while the 64V+ is the 86c764
(nevermind the numbers). The Virge has a (crappy) 3D engine and the 2D
engine from the 64V+.
They are indistinguishable from Linux side because the 3D engine is
unused. XFree86 3.3.6 + GLX supports the Virge hardware 3D, but if you
really want 3D you should go for an Nvidia card. So the S3 cards (ALL of
'em) are only good for 2D, and since the '764 and '325 share the same 2D
engine, same story.
