Thanks to everyone who responded with ideas. I will be checking dia and
xcircuit as well as xfig. I have never done figures in LaTex, so I am
adding to my learning curve. But Doc. Manalastas, you see the progression
I have in mind when you write:

As for the ascii art -

No, this was a different tac altogether for times when I am lazy and want
to include something in a text email, or to possibly include as backups to
figures for the few remaining Lynx users out there. I'm thinking it may
not be worth the effort. Ascii art schematics are just not that great....
