Any generic external modem should work fine with Linux. The Taiwanese
brand you're referring to is probably CNet...I have such a modem and have
been using it for more than a year with no problem. The USR modems are
godawfully expensive, and IMO not worth it. They may last you years and
years, but at the rate at which technology is evolving they may well
become hazardous waste (because of the lead in the PCB's) long before the
warranty expires... If you're just going to use it for yourself the kind
of reliability you get with the five times more expensive USR is not IMO
worth it.
