Dunno for the root, but it could be possible for the others like /home,
/usr, etc. thru losetup/mount.

Just a tip, if u want to implement this via kernel 2.4.x, forget
it. loopback device support is broken. Alan cox's 2.4.2-ac3
seems to solve it though. go with 2.2.x series for now.

None that i know. All the solutions i've seen is to back your partition
and convert to reiserfs.

Is informative. Have used ext3 since last year, and i am satisfied with
it. One cool thing is that even if u use a new/old kernel w/out ext3
support, your linux box will still work. it just doesn't have any
journaling capabilities.

That's unlike reiserfs, If say ur reiserfs capable linux box won't boot,
ur hosed if you don't have a reiserfs boot disk/cd at hand. don't get me
wrong, i like reiserfs! I'm just fond of ext3's advantages. The e2fsprogs
1.19 and up supports ext3. That's basically the only software that you
have to upgrade.

there are two versions, the ext3-0.0.3b and ext3-0.0.6b. The newer version
is unstable (i get eth0 memory exhausted, must be the Update to the 3c59x
drivers.) for me. So I use ext3-0.0.3b for now. Of course, YMMV.
