This is not a direct answer to your question as I have not yet used mrtg.
You may want to try using iptraf, though. It allows you to view the
traffic going through your network ports. It's pretty neat, if you ask me.
For certain applications (like say, graphing network traffic on a dynamic
website) it won't do, though. I just thought I'd mention it. :-)
