The "thing" with internal modems is that they may or may not be
"Winmodems" or soft modems (and then there are two types of soft modems).
Some softmodems aren't all that bad ... IF they've got working Linux
drivers for them. My laptop's got a Lucent "Winmodem" that's working great
now, using stuff I downloaded from a link I found in
<http://www.linmodems.org/>. Find out what your modem brand and model are,
then go searching on the 'Net (there's a link to a modem database in the
URL I mentioned) to see if there is support. If you're in luck, the
internal modem will save you space and that extra external serial port. If
you're not in luck, go get an external modem instead. To play safe, go get
a trustworthy external modem.

There was talk on the list awhile back about what brands of external
modems are good. Search the list archives available at
<http://plug.linux.org.ph>.

PS- some violent comments about the way you posted your message:

1. I'm not sure, but the way this was written (vague: what modem?) made it
rather difficult to answer, and made it sound like it should have been in
the Linux Newbie list instead (send the word "subscribe" in the body of an
e-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED]). Dumbly written
questions make the writer seem dumb. A lot of times intelligence is
largely a matter of projection. (Hehehe) I hope you get what I mean.

2. Perhaps you could have changed the subject of your message?

a. When POSTING a message it is a good habit to compose a new message
rather than reply to an existing one (and changing the subject or not
changing it at all). Threading algorithms in archiving programs get f*cked
up by katamaran like this (replying instead of composing where you will
have to specify the address).

b. Your e-mail had ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with the sentence "plug
digest, Vol 1 #313 - 13 msgs". Well, aside from the fact that now we know
you replied to a digest sent to you with that subject. You're asking, help
us out and specify WHAT YOU'RE ASKING ABOUT!

3. Would you mind deleting all that cr*p you sent with your reply? You had
a two-liner question (that lacked a lot of relevant data to begin with)
with one line for your name. But your message was around 20k in size
(including a few extra headers, of course). That's larger than any of the
other 86 PLUG e-mail I currently have in my PLUG folder (I periodically
flush this, as we have an archive on the web anyway). It's even larger
then a bunch of them combined together (select arbitrary components). Wow.

I hope you get my point.
