i'm not a guy from pldt..  though i know some of the operations on the dsl same with 
the cable internet.  they really couldn't use any other TAs because of 
interoperability problems, especially in assigning speed (or provision as what they 
call it) on each user.  there are really existing standards on the dsl and cable 
internet, but some manufacturers of the equipments couldn't comply to those set 
protocols.  that's why most providers really use the same equipments from their 
central offices to the user's end so that they wouldn't have a hard time in 
maintaining those TA's.  

some of the providers though, like destiny cable, have tested other equipments to run 
on other infrastructures, i.e. COM21 to run with motorola cable modems.  but as far as 
i know, they would still use proprietary equipments..
