Sorry for the out-of-topic post, but this is something that I think every Filipino
should know.

Subject: [gabayano] Fw: Miriam - not a HARVARD alumna afterall!
Dear Mr. de Quiros,
I fully agree with the sentiments you express in your column yesterday, February 27,
2001. May I just point out that based on Harvard University's own records, Senator
Miriam Defensor-Santiago is definitely NOT an alumna of Harvard.
Please do not simply take my word on this. I contacted the Harvard University Alumni
Records Office today by telephone (617-495- 2371) to verify if she has alumni status
at ANY of the faculties here. She does not.
For your reference, this hotline service is provided by the University primarily as an
easy way to counter resume fraud.
I feel duty bound to make this clarification in the light of the Senator's statements
to the media which tend to grossly misrepresent Filipinos who actually are Harvard
alumnae or current students here at the University.
Contrary to the Senator's statements, a fundamental part of the learning experience
here at Harvard is the respectful discussion and deliberation of all views, no matter
how radical or provocative. No Harvard alumnus or student, in his or her right mind,
would go to the level of labeling another person an "anonymous little insect" simply
because he or she disagrees with that person.
It has also been reported that Senator Defensor-Santiago claims alumni status by
virtue of attending a summer workshop of the Program of Instruction for Lawyers
offered by the Harvard Law School. Assuming that this indeed is true, please note
that this lecture & discussion series is an extension service of the University that
is open to the public (even nonlawyers) on a space-available basis at the law school
campus each summer and the first week of November every year. It in no way confers
alumni status on the attendee. In other words, as long as a seat is available (the
waiting list for the mediation workshop in particular is currently 3 years) and you
can pay, you can go. No grades are given out during this series and participants are
provided with certificates of attendance. Assuming therefore that the Senator actually
visited the campus to attend this series, she cannot on this fact alone expressly or
even impliedly claim that she ever studied at Harvard Law School. More information on
this extension service of the University is readily available online at
http://www.law.harvard.edu/programs/PIL/ .
If I may borrow your own words, what we apparently have here as it appears from the
record is not "signature folly" but a case of "counterfeit goods".
I only wish to make it clear that not only is the claim made by the claimant here
wrong, but the claimant herself is in no way representative of the class she seems so
desperate to be identified with.
I therefore have emailed you, the Philippine Daily Inquirer, and the Philippine Center
for Investigative Journalism so that this matter can be brought to light and properly
clarified.
Yours sincerely,
Teodoro Kalaw IV (Master of Laws [LL.M.] 2001, Harvard Law School)
