This is not directly related to Linux (although I am asking for possible Linux-centric ratings), so I apologize ahead for the extra bandwidth this may cost. As I previously mentioned I'm gearing up to set up a new server for us. I've already got the RAID controller (3Ware Escalade 3W-6400) and the disks. I've thought the rest out, but I'm needing a little help as far as the mobo is concerned. I'm using VillMan's site to check out the basic stuff and the prices, and I've narrowed down my list to two, the ASUS P3V4X and the ASUS P3W-E. It looks like the major difference between the two are the chipsets they use. The P3V4X uses a VIA Apollo Pro133A VT82C694X 133MHz AGPset with VT82C596B South Bridge chipset, while the P3W-E uses the Intel i810e chipset. Then of course the P3W-E has a built-in video card with an optional Intel NIC (built-in, too). Note that both are Slot 1, as I'm planning to get an Intel Pentium III 667MHz SECC2 CPU. Would anyone care to tell me what real-world benefits having an SECC2 CPU will do? Given that I'll be using this as a server and it'll be headless most of the time, the video card is a non-issue as long as it exists. Also, I've got a RAID controller so the on-board controllers are non-issues except for the CD-ROM drive. What then, will the chipset still affect, and in what way should this affect my decision-making? Both have USB controllers, I presume one uses the VIA chipset and the other the Intel chipset. Has anyone tried using these USB controllers with devices on a Linux 2.4 kernel? Oh, any news on getting USB modems to work with Linux? I'd love to free up one of the two serial ports so that I can hook the server up to an APC Smart-UPS, but I need two modems up and running. Right now I have two external modems on the two serial ports.
