the markets for current crop of USB and Firewire devices are quite differentiated. The
firewire devices are more to consumer electronics connectivity (w/c really aren't
cheap), while usb devices are sold as alternative to the very slow parallel ports.
one more advantage of firewire (over usb) in consumer electronics is that the firewire
port doesn't require computer connectivity to connect to another firewire device (if
so designed). there's a proper term for this, but i forgot.
