Linux requires a processor with memory management unit
implementing protected mode memory, so that processes do
not write into one another's memory (such restriction
being enforced by hardware implementation).
Intel 386 and better processors happen to have protected mode
memory. Of course it helps that the 386 has a larger address
space (32-bit addressible; the ia64 has even larger address
space and Linux is ia64 ready).
