if the NIC and network supports it, it should be automatic, on some
drivers though, you might have to reload the driver module for the changes
to take effect.
many drivers also have an option where you could lock the NIC to 10 mbps
or 100 mbps this depends on one driver to another so it's best to look at
your driver's documentation.
