They are different models of communication and so serve different market
niches.
I think that for the newbie, particularly those coming from the MS
orientation, IRC has been strongly associated with mIRC/chat. Easy to
understand. Jabber might appeal to those who are geared toward the
ICQ/AIM/Yahoo Messenger group.
I use IRC -and- a few other tools for real time network comms.
One that I found truly interesting is gale (http://www.gale.org). It
supports encrypted/signed comms for user-to-user and user-to-group modes.
And then there's MU*s and MOOs.
