PLUG (and hence the PH Linux Newbie forum) is a democratic community. You
probably noticed that we not just speak our minds, but we do so with
gusto. It's been quite awhile since I heard of getting someone booted out
of a list, and that wasn't even PLUG. It was from the Linux 99 mailing
list and I believe that was for good reason. So I wouldn't be worried
about getting booted out. :)

I do not know whether this statement describes PLUG or not. I do know,
however, that PLUG is a community, and a pretty diverse one, at that.
Plus, because we are a virtual community, we have the benefit of being
able to hind behind the mask provided by computers and the Internet and
anonymity. I have noticed that these factors allow for a certain level of
arrogance to come out of us that would otherwise be hidden for fear of
physical combat. I am not saying that this is an excuse to be violent or
to engage in flame wars at will. I am instead suggesting that we take the
emails in PLUG and the PH Linux Newbie forum with a grain of salt. Readers
are, after all, behind the same mask the author is. This gives for a lot
of misunderstanding and possible exaggeration in our endless attempts to
simulate the emotions that the author had when he/she wrote his/her
e-mail.

I would not consider PLUG as a teacher. From my experience with the
community, I have noticed that messages phrased like a student asking a
teacher get the most flak. PLUG is a community of peers. There are those
of us who know more of one thing than the rest, those of us with more
experience, those of us with more of this or that. But we are still a
community of peers, and as such we must see this resource as such. When
you treat PLUG like a HOWTO, a FAQ, or an encyclopedia that you can simply
tap and extract information from, you're bound to get a virtual beating.
Or ignored, depending on how exasperated the members of the community are.

I think it is good that you have shared your views. As a community we
would die if it were not for the openness of our members. In the same
light, I would suggest that instead of seeing PLUG as a "users group that
gives free unbiased information", I would see PLUG as a "community of
enthusiasts that exchanges information and ideas". It's the giving and
taking that keeps us alive. We are not a simple fountain of information
waiting to be tapped. :)
