Hi,
I recently was able to install a base system of debain potato on my pc.
At first I dreaded the thought of installing it. I first started using
Linux on mandrake 6.1. Then I moved to RedHat 7.0 then RedHat 7.1.
Soon after, after weeks of listening to jijo speak so highly of debain,
I decided to try debain. I heard debain was the "hacker" linux and very
un - user friendly. So even if i had Debian potato2.2r3 for the longest
time I didn't install it. But a few days back I did a base install and
I was amazed! Wow! Finally I had only the "prime" components of the
system. I tried to install X, but later I realized why the called
debain "rock solid". The packages on debain are super stable, but also
not up to date (gotta wait for woody [=)]). Since my video card was
new, and wasn't really compatible with debain potato 2.2r3's XFree86
3.x.x (sorry i forgot eh), I ended up doing a base install, then not
choosing to install anything at dselect. This was my choice of course.
And since I used to be an RPM boy, I didn't know squat about apt-get
or the debain source tree. After studying as many howtos I could get
(or even understand) I ended up with a little basic knowledge of debain
(but still more questions, by the way if anyone could help I posted a
few questions of mine on the ph-linux-newbie list [=)]). The one thing
I was so happy about debain was that it always seemed to be one step
ahead of you. It asked about my bootloader (something redhat had me
guessing), and even backed up a file I was editing from scratch
"/etc/apt/sources.list". All and all I ended up more confident in
bash$, and happy with my base system. I would choose debain if ever I
had to install a server on a PC. I know there has been a discussion (I
think its still on going). About Debain on 486, not sure about that. I
just like the fact that i can build the system I want, without most of
the fat =) . Just wanted to share my debain experience.
later dudes,
wakks escay
