Why is everyone surprised by this? Microsoft and other software
manufacturers like Apple have been borrowing open source code from the very
beginning. And of course it's to their advantage. And everybody benefits,
even the those who make open source code available.
What Microsoft is guilty of is hypocrisy. That they trash the open source
concept but at the same time, benefit from it. Apple at least makes no bones
about the fact that they based the OSX kernel on FreeBSD. In fact they
comply with open source licenses by making their Darwin kernel code freely
available to developers. Microsoft should do the same and simply comply with
open source licenses and include whatever code they borrow with their
software distributions.
