spms are the srpms in redhat as it is on suse. to install it just invoke rpm -ivh 
package.spm....example: rpm -ivh  mysql.spm... after
doing so you can go to /usr/src/packages/SPECS and you'll see the spec file of the 
mysql in their..check out also the /usr/src/packages/SOURCES/ and you will see the 
mysql-version-tar.gz source files of mysql.....the spec file contains the build 
routines of your package depending on how you want it compiled ....something like the 
stuff that you define using the ./configure script from a software dloaded from 
source. only that this time it is via a convenient package manager like rpm. but 
still, you can opt to build directly from tar.gz and dispense of the rpm spec file 
whichever youre most comfortable with....
