So a plug-misc would be more like an anytopic chat group - like GENMSG or CHAT. ;)
Usual netiquette would apply - keep the flames and forwards down, that sort of thing.

I think it's a terrific idea. One of the things I like so much about Linux is the
culture that's grown up around it and made it possible. Besides, I'd love to chat
about computer culture - things like the Jargon File (really funny) and ethics
questions...

... but that's not really a Linux thing any more, is it?

What _would_ go into a plug-misc?

I guess the reason why I sometimes (rather frequently, lately) post offtopic here is
because it's a convenient way to contact many people with similar interests. =)

Like Oh! My Goddess! (Keiichi is soooo clueless, though), Linux, and cool little
gadgets... =)

But then that's a three layer cascade, and quite a few people will be subscribed to
all three.

On IRC, there's #linux and #linuxhelp. #linux is where people who like Linux
socialize. They don't have to help people - in fact, the topic sometimes reads "Need
help? #linuxhelp". ;) It's sorta like #linpeople, I think.

On #linuxhelp, we try to be much nicer to newbies. RTFM's not really said without a
helpful clue as to which docs will be useful. We're there to try to help, after all.
It's a nice place to hang out - I learn a lot while doing volunteer tech support! ;)
Develops your patience, too. <wry grin>

I think the issue before was that newbies were getting way intimidated by the PLUG
traffic? ;) Technical jargon, holy wars, RTFMs, that sort of thing? (Okay, maybe a bit
of an exaggeration.)

I suppose a nice welcome message with a disclaimer might really come in handy. Useful
pointers - linuxdoc.org has excellent HOWTOs, for one - and something along the lines
of "Don't worry if you don't understand what they're talking about."

In fact, it might be nice to add a little more detail to the list descriptions...
