It's not the fsck that is the matter here. It's whether your data is sent
to disk on time or not. Try this:

1. edit a file.
2. save that file.
3. turn off your computer right away.

Compare this with:

1. edit a file.
2. save that file.
3. run sync.
4. turn off your computer right after that sync.

If there is absolutely no difference in what the files looks like and they
both contain the correct data then wow, and please share your setup with
us. If the files look different as I suspect them to be then hopefully you
will see the point of Juan Miguel's "poor man's UPS" and my alternative
solution via bdflush.
