ASUS CUV4X-D uses the VIA chipset, whose APIC is not really recognized by
stock kernels. Upgrade to 2.4.9 or something.. I have an SMP-board (ABIT
VP6, it's very similar to the CUV4X-D) but I only have one processor =(
me poor.. so haven't tried the SMP on VIA code yet. But many people have
and it works fine.

Not on the RED HAT SUPPLIED kernel. Red Hat ripped out the ReiserFS code,
it's a political thing (I guess because Red Hat pays Stephen Tweedie's
wages, they want to use ext3). You need to get the latest kernel and start
from there.
