one very good reason to use gcc is to avoid accessing invalid memory -
in Turbo C you can overwrite other bits of memory causing crashes.

another reason is to have true pointers and flat memory, not
the x86 real mode segment:offset pointers.

of course, the students will be looking for an IDE - 
I only know emacs for that :)
