..on the desktop.
I tried installing FreeBSD 4.3 on my box because I couldn't find my RH7.1
installation media and I had broken my RPMDB with the %^*%(#@% KDE2.2
RPM's which in addition to being slow, break a lot of RH7.1 packages.
Well, the ancient XFree86 3.3.6 on FreeBSD doesn't support my video card
(ATI Radeon). So I downloaded XFree86 4.1.0 and installed it. After 45
minutes of cursing I was staring at the famous "three xterms and an
xclock" on a moire-inducing gray background, with the minimalist
interface of twm.
tried to install Netscape but while I was un-tarring the tarball, the
system locked hard. Couldn't Ctrl-Alt-Backspace it. I'm sure this ain't
hardware 'cause Linux is rock-solid on this box.
Anyway, whatever it is, making FreeBSD into a decent desktop is a lot like
extracting a tooth without anesthesia. It hurts, and afterwards there's a
big hole. =(
So here I am using Tera Term on Windoze to write this. I have no UNIX OS
on this box. Grr.
