No, you don't have to remove GNOME. As a matter of fact Xfce can use among
others the GNOME and KDE menus, and can run GNOME and KDE applications. I
don't know if you could say they "work hand in hand", but they work quite
differently. Also, if you'll be running mostly GNOME or KDE applications I
don't see the use for running Xfce. Why? Because aside from that little
you save not running Enlightenment or some other hefty window manager,
you'll be loading the bloated libraries and applications anyway. So unless
you will be limiting yourself (like I do) to environment-independent stuff
like Opera or Netscape or StarOffice (that will eat up your RAM no matter
what desktop environment you pick), then go with the prettiest. ;>
For me, though, it's familiarity. I started using Xfce when I had a lowly
system with 128MB RAM and a Celeron 400MHz. I didn't want the extra bloat
of KDE or GNOME, and really just wanted a system that didn't look like
Windows. Xfce looks more like CDE than Windows and for that I love it.
Now that I've gotten used to Xfce, I use it even if I more RAM and a
system that can probably handle the bloat of GNOME or KDE.
But yes, the configs of Xfce and fvwm are quite similar, and if you know
how, you can do the key bindings with most any window manager. I learned
about the bindings, after all, with KDE. :)
