The only disadvantages of this particular design:
- if a modem fails, it's gone, you probably have to replace the entire
card.
- in my experience, if one modem suddenly stops responding, you need to
power down the unit just to reset that particular modem.
- It's also much more expensive if you total the price of the unit and
compare it with the prices of the items if you get them separately
but the 'clean' setup of just having to plug in the phone clips to the
back of the modem, eliminating the clutter of serial cables + modem +
adaptors + multi-serial card makes it worth it even though.
