Hi Andre,
#acronyms we had to add to our memories. webservices under
#linux? hmm...sounds like the MONO project the gnome creator
#(forgot his name) is trying to start in order to port
#MS.NET to Linux
#
Ximian's MONO project is a port of the .NET development platform to
Linux. I believe the initialive includes a port of C#, Common Language
Runtime (CLR), and a truck-load of APIs. The CLR is just virtual machine,
just like the Java Virtual Machine (JVM). It has its own byte-code called
Common Language Interface (CLI).
Hopefully, .NET development platform truly becomes Write (using your
favorite language) Once Run Anywhere.. Write VB.NET applications (or
course w/o use of Windows-only resources), and run them under Linux.
BTW VB.NET is a whole new product/development tool. It's not just a
simple update of the tool. M$ has decided to:
- remove a number of the legacy BASIC keywords,
- add full threading support (there was none in VB),
- add Object Orientation (the old VB used to only have encapsulation, and
a half-baked polymorphism; no inheritance)
- etc.
What's it got to do with Linux? When the MONO project's CLR becomes
available, an application written in VB.NET, C#, and even the rumored Java
.NET CLI by Rational, and any language that can produce the correct CLI
will be able run, and live happily with in the context of the CLR.
BTW M$, and Corel have announce a few months ago about a port to FreeBSD
of the CLR. Dunno the full extent of the deal.. but I remember reading
that annoucement at Yahoo! News.
Now, if you look at .NET at a 10,000-foot view, it has a striking
similirity with Sun's J2EE platform. One edge the .NET framework has over
J2EE is .NET promotes many-language-many-platforms while in the J2EE
world, it's one-language-many-platforms.
stay cool.
