Unless ur using the cool Veritas FS,
yep... init 1 or stopping sendmail and
backup the thing say, using tar. 

caveats, it's still better to go to single
mode coz even if you stop sendmail
or any mta for that matter, pine has
the ability to access /var/spool/mail/<username>
directly.
