hi, guys! i wrote a few months ago about a problem i had with mandrake 8 on my laptop, where i had a smooth installation, but everytime i booted, i'd encounter a kernel panic of some sort.... well, i never really got around to addressing the problem until yesterday; before yesterday i just made do with mandrake 7.... it turns out, i had to recompile my kernel and enable the "Toshiba Laptop support", but not as a loadable module but as a... how is it called? a statically linked module (eneabled with the '*' option instead of the 'M' option). geez, it took me from about 10 pm yesterday until 5 am today to figure everything out!
anyways, fyi, in case any of you have similar problems when using a Toshiba Satellite 2100 CDS notebook, what i did was i recompiled my kernel with a statically linked module for Toshiba Laptop Support (tama ba terminology ko?). also, since my laptop has an AMD K6-2 CPU, i enabled support for that as well and did away with support for other processors. later, i also updated my kernel to 2.4.7, which i got from a Linux Magazine CD (i have no idea what the latest kernel is yet.... i'll check it out later). i repeated statically linking toshiba laptop support, etc; after that, everything worked fine! well, almost everything - my USB support still doesn't work, so i still can't use my USB trackball... but what the heck, the keyboard mouse-stick-wachamacallit will do! oh btw, can i yell? AAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH IT FINALLY $%@ WORKS!!! whew! it was hard finding the free time to really mess around with linux, being a microsoft slave at the office, but hell, the effort was worth it! best regards, joel realubit now a happy closet linux user :) :) :) _ Philippine Linux Users Group.
