I've noticed that sendmail is singled out again in some other posts. Postfix/Qmail/Exim are fine... I personally use Exim. My point here is that Im not a sendmail zealot (although Im always a protoss player. :0 ) just pointing out the strength of sendmail. So the question is, Why criticize sendmail again?
If you dont know Most large fortune 100 companies and *Unix companies like Sun, HP, and IBM run, use and support sendmail. Why? One word... Because of the MTA's *Maturity*. These large companies practically demands it. If your *Unix server runs for 7+ yrs., Running non- stop 24/7, running mission critical applications and mail which Enterprise MTA would you prefer? And are you prepared to put your name, career and job on the line by specifying alternative mtas to do the job? One answer, and that is to use sendmail. It has been used for nearly 3 decades, the configs, features and even bugs have been very understood well. It's even easier to use now coz has a gui admin front end to configure sendmail. Other mtas have only been developed for a couple of years and they have to prove to these companies that they are up to the job. You say yahoo and hotmail uses alternative mtas! But then, they have mta gurus out there for help. These companies dont have those, And the most critical part is that these companies need support for their mta. All the Unix big boys answers that need, they supports sendmail. For the postfix/qmail/exim to be accepted, (and this is very important.) by the corporate world, there must be a big company to support it. But until now, there is none. Hopefully, someone will try to solve the problem. Now, let me see. My above remarks does not mock or ridicule other mtas! And that is my other point. As a *Unix sysadmin you should be broadminded and not be closed minded in choosing IT solutions. Different mtas for different needs. Its not just shoving your favorite mta on the throats of noob and saying use this! Its good! I *hate* long posts like this but sorry, have to rant and speak about it. :) Lastly, read this excerpt at sendmail.com: Performance tests conducted by Sendmail, Inc. and IBM demonstrate that a single IBM eServer z900 mainframe can support more than 2 million users, making it the largest single-server email system on Linux available in the industry. For organizations requiring even larger environments, Sendmail's cluster architecture allows customers to harness multiple mainframes to transparently serve an even greater number of users. With its seamless scalability and high reliability, the Sendmail solution for IBM eServer z900 is ideal for global enterprises with mission-critical email systems that support employees, customers and partners, and for service providers that host email services. _ Philippine Linux Users Group.
