I encountered a similar problem wth RH6.2 when I treid to upgrade to Berkeley DB (BDB) version 3.3. I couldn't get it to work even after recompiling the BDB source and installing it. Luckily, our application that uses BDB had to run on FreeBSD so I ended up recompiling db3.3 in BSD without any problems.
